Now, Museum Podcasts…

Source: The New York Times

Audio tours of museums are being upended around the world by podcasting, the wildly popular practice of podcasting recordings online, so they can be heard through a computer or downloaded to tiny mobile devices like iPods and other MP3 players. Museum podcasts have taken off, changing the look and feel of audio tours at places ranging from the venerable, like the Met and the Victoria and Albert, to the little known.

Selected museum podcasts worth listening to:

  • Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden – Its podcasts sometimes include short films fro video-equipped MP3 players.
  • Metropolitan Museum of Art – Listen to the actor Sam Waterston narrate the story of Hatshepsut, queen of Egypt.
  • Museum of Modern Art – The museum provides a wealth of archival recorded interviews with artists and scholars, provided with the help of its P.S. 1 affiliate in Queens.
  • San Francisco Museum of Modern Art – "Artcast" series, produced ab out once a month. In the most recent podcast, listeners can hear a reading of the Japanese photographer Shomei Tomatsu’s writings on Americanization in postwar Japan.
  • United States Holocaust Memorial Museum – Listen to the Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel talk about memory and bearing witness, part of a series about the issue of genocide prevention. (Type "podcast" into the search window to find the series.)

What are your ideas on how these podcasts can be used in the classroom or online learning environments?
